CLEAR LAKE CALIFORNIA
Things to do at Clear lake
|
The
Lake County California (Clear Lake) area is a beacon that shines on when it comes to the beauty
of the landscape. Few counties can compare when it comes to truly fine
recreation, relaxation, and retirement. Maybe this is why some people
even say that Clear Lake is one of the best-kept secrets in Northern
California.
|
|
|
There
are other smaller Lakes within the County as well. Each of them offers
unique pleasures. Lake Pillsbury and Indian Valley Lake are remote and
mostly uninhabited. National Forest and BLM land nearly surrounds these
two remote lakes. Wildlife abounds there for an experience of backwoods
at its best. Blue Lakes and Highland Springs Reservoir are a couple
of smaller lakes within a few miles of Clear Lake. Enjoy quiet picnics,
canoeing, fishing, and small boating just off the main roads. But when
it comes to the Legends of All Lakes, Clear Lake Takes Center
Stage. The attractions are numerous. You're not just limited
to champion fishing, open class boating, sailing, and swimming.

|
|
Our
annual events are a must to attend. The 4th of July celebrations
with fireworks over the Lake are spectacular. There's boat races, bass
tournaments, worm races, festivals, auto races, car shows, antique wooden
boat show, hang gliding, para-sailing, wine tasting, rodeo, county fair,
and much more!

Clear
Lake also offers the golf enthusiast some great courses. Hidden Valley
Lake Golf Course, Adams Springs, Cobb Meadows, and Clear Lake Riviera
Yacht and Golf Club are fine and challenging courses. The Clearlake
Riviera course is especially challenging because of its unique steeper
slopes. Enjoy beautiful views of the lake from almost every hole
at this golf course.

Public and Private Lands
|
|
| Several thousand acres of public land are prevalent around Clear Lake. This limits to some degree, the amount of private land available. The public lands are recognized as the Mendocino National Forest, Boggs Mountain State Forest, Snow Mountain Wilderness Area, BLM lands, Clear Lake State Park, Anderson State Park, and more. Their diverse locations can enlighten most any outdoorsman. There are some things money can't buy and this is one of them. If you enjoy trail riding, exploring, camping, hunting, nature watching, biking, or just taking a leisurely drive, this area may be what your looking for. There is no substitute for wild open spaces in crowded places. | |

History
|
|
| The history buff should have fun learning about such a unique lake and all of its history. Clear Lake is the largest natural lake in California and arguably the oldest in the western United States. Some analysts have speculated that it could be over 400,000 years old. The Native Americans, known as Pomo's, have settled and lived here for thousands of years. Their work in basketry is known nationwide. Their baskets are highly sought after by museums. Both the Lake County and the Old School House Museums are excellent places to visit. | |

| Famous Mt. Konocti is a legendary landmark that can be seen from many miles away. Konocti is an Indian name meaning "Mountain" and "Woman". It towers some 4,300 feet high and is linked to the Lakes' beginnings. There are many legends and stories associated with the mountain. It is rumored that a huge cavern even exists within. | |
| Early American pioneers first settled Clear Lake in the 1850's. Shortly thereafter, small towns sprang up around its beautiful shorelines. Our government took control of Clear Lake itself and much of the land in Lake County including some of Mt. Konocti, which still holds true today. By the turn of the century Clear Lake was emerging as the playground for the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley. The area was home to many famous hot spring spas and resorts. Thousands of visitors flocked to the County to "take the waters" for better health. Most of these beautiful resorts and spas are gone. Today the tourists still flock to the Lake to "take to the water" for different reasons such as water sports and fishing. | |

Business
|
|
| Just about everything from superstores to mom and pop stores are found around Clear Lake. Stores such as K-mart, Wal-Mart, Safeway, Rays, Sentry, Longs Drugs, Rite-Aide, many Banks and Restaurant franchises too. Antique shops, gift shops, grocery stores, and other stores seem to do very well here. Whatever the need is, a business can usually be found here that offers it. Have you ever wanted to view a drive-in movie? It's a forgotten form of entertainment but it's still here at Clear Lake. Multi-plex cinema theaters are also found in two locations by the lake as well. | |

Healthcare, Education, and Air Transportation
|
|
| Two hospitals serve our communities; they are Sutter Lakeside and Redbud Adventist. The area also offers two colleges, Clear Lake Community College and Mendocino College. Numerous public and private schools serve our lower grade levels as well. Lampson Airfield is located in our county seat known as Lakeport. It's a delightful location with a restaurant, airplane hangers, flight training, and airplane servicing to accommodate the pilots. | |

Climate and Weather
|
|
| Clear Lake's elevation stands at around 1,320 feet above sea level. This moderate elevation governs much of our mild climate. We have four distinct seasons at the lake. Almost every year we have a snowfall or two, which is usually a welcome surprise. Our summers are warm, averaging 50L to 98H degrees between the months of June and September. The average rainfall is 25 inches at the basin to as high as 60 inches in the mountain ranges. Clear Lake prides itself as one of the few counties in California with the cleanest air. Some people like to say, "We're smog and fog free!" | |
